The Monarch Formally Removes Prince Andrew of HRH Style and Prince Title

Through a decisive action, the reigning monarch has officially stripped the former Duke of York of his Royal Highness attribute and his princely title.

These alterations were formalized by issuing letters patent under the official state seal, that have been recorded in the UK's official public record.

The entry stated: “His Majesty has been pleased by letters patent under the Great Seal of the Realm dated 3 November 2025 to declare that the individual in question shall no longer be entitled to hold and enjoy the style, title or attribute of ‘HRH’ and the titular dignity of ‘Prince’.”

A separate record affirmed the removal of the dukedom from the peerage list, with immediate effect.

It read: “His Majesty has been pleased by royal warrant under his royal sign manual dated 30 October 2025 to direct his government minister to cause the titleholder to be removed from the peerage roll.”

Background of the Decision

This move comes after increasing scrutiny over the former prince's links to the late financier Jeffrey Epstein, exacerbated by the release of Virginia Giuffre's memoir.

The author alleged that she was assaulted by Andrew after being brought by Jeffrey Epstein, allegations that Andrew has always strenuously denied.

Mechanism of Removing Titles

The king employed his monarchical powers—recognized rights held by the monarch—after consultation with Cabinet Office officials, instead of through parliamentary means.

Letters patent and royal warrants are instruments of this prerogative, used to bestow or remove titles and honors.

Since the Royal Highness designation is granted by such documents, it can be revoked through the same process.

Additional Actions and Support

After the palace statement, the senior legal official was directed to draft the required paperwork for the removal of titles.

The decision also includes Andrew giving up his tenancy on Royal Lodge, a 30-room royal property where he has lived for two decades.

The government endorsed the monarch's move.

Exception

In spite of the stripping of honors, it was confirmed that Andrew will keep his Falklands service medal, awarded for his role as a helicopter co-pilot during the Falklands conflict.
