The UK government has included an additional eleven new destinations to its travel alert roster about the risks of industrial alcohol contamination from tainted beverages.
The expanded warning features Bangladesh, India, Iran, Jordan, Libya, Malawi, Malaysia, Morocco, Nepal, Papua New Guinea, and Rwanda after what officials describe as "a global increase in the incidence of reported cases" of methanol poisoning.
Only last month, authorities had previously added Ecuador, Japan, Kenya, Mexico, Nigeria, Peru, Russia, and Uganda to the standing list, following several high-profile incidents including the fatal loss of half a dozen visitors in Laos in 2024.
Tourists are being advised that even minimal doses of industrial alcohol can cause blindness or death within 12–48 hours.
Industrial alcohol is a poisonous substance commonly employed in antifreeze, car cleaning liquid, and paint thinner. It is not meant for ingestion.
Although it is generated during the production of spirits, reputable manufacturers reduce it to low, safe levels for ingestion through the distillation process.
However in certain nations, it is illegally mixed into alcoholic drinks to cut costs, and since it is flavorless and scentless, it is extremely challenging to notice.
Authorities official Hamish Falconer stated that all travellers should recognize the indicators of toxic alcohol contamination.
"While having drinks overseas, opt for reputable establishments and refrain from homemade alcohol or free shots," the minister warned.
"If something appears suspicious, for example a fatigue that's much more severe than typical or vision problems – get medical help immediately."
The full roster of destinations identified as carrying a threat of toxic alcohol poisoning currently features: Brazil, Bangladesh, Cambodia, Costa Rica, Ecuador, Fiji, India, Indonesia, Iran, Jordan, Kenya, Laos, Libya, Malawi, Malaysia, Mexico, Morocco, Nepal, Nigeria, Papua New Guinea, Peru, Russia, Rwanda, Thailand, Turkey, Uganda, and Vietnam.
