Steam Next Fest is currently underway, and enthusiasts have discovered plenty of engaging creations from small studios. Yet, one catches the eye for its offbeat concept. Named Unko Technica, this old-school styled side-scrolling game includes a protagonist that is literally a dung attempting to travel to a commode. As a fun fact, "Unko" translates to "poop."
Player controls is straightforward: just use a single jump button. Throughout 150 challenges, encounter boss fights and visit a shop to purchase skins for your poop character.
Time your actions precisely, as a mistake forces starting over. Jump on air pockets to hurl the poop upward, navigate fragile surfaces, and touch triggers to open secret routes. Earn UN-KOINS and use them on tougher levels in which things gets crazy.
Visually, the demo features vibrant level designs and a killer soundtrack. Its minimalist art featuring shifting geometric shapes may remind gamers of old favorites like Earthbound.
Although difficult to name similar titles where you play as a piece of feces, video games frequently featured fecal matter. For example, in Death Stranding, you can craft throwables from protagonist waste. Games like Palworld and Ark: Survival Evolved utilize feces as plant food. Naturally, such content shows up extensively in the South Park RPG The Stick of Truth.
Despite its goofy concept, Unko Technica has already received significant awards, such as taking top honors at a major publisher's GYAAR Studio in 2023. A playable preview is available now on Steam, with the complete version planned to debut on computers in the fall.
